This needle case made of bone is made after an early medieval finding in birka. The Brass ring goes through openings in the bone case.
Needle cases like these have often been worn on cords which have been attached to the traditional worn fibulas on early medieval overdresses. Therefore they have been part of the early medieval womens dress accessories.
