Winningas / leg wraps made of cotton in herringbone pattern

Since the 2nd - 3rd century, there has been archaeological evidence of winningas (also called calf bandages or leg wraps) in the Germanic region. Romans at Hdrianswall, Byzantines, Franks, Alamanni, Bavarians and Wends (Slavs) used the calf wraps. Later in the Middle Ages, calf bindings were also used by Normans, Vikings and other peoples of Central and Northern Europe.
They were an integral part of the garment. They were wrapped from the foot to below the knee and served as a substitute for socks, as well as for more warmth and gave protection against injuries.

The leg wraps we offer were made from 100% cotton in a herringbone pattern and from one complete piece. The edges were sewn with a flatlock seam, consequently there are no pressing seams.
They are fastened, or closed, to the leg with a simple cotton band.
