Description

Scandinavian sword of the vendel period, incl. leather sheath

This beautifully worked sword was reconstructed after a boat grave find of a ship grave near Uppsala in Sweden. Because of the decorations on the sword it is assumed that it dates back to the approx. 7th - 8th century. The finds of these swords were made in very high quality and handicraft.

The shape of the sword is a classic example of a Nordic weapon. The blade was forged from spring steel and was not sharpened. The continuous blade was riveted to the pommel.

The highly detailed engravings in the quillon and pommel were reproduced as faithfully as possible. The quillon is 9 cm long and 1.5 cm thick. The generous pommel was made of brass and finished with an antique finish. The red stones on the pommel were decorated with red enamels, which remind of real garnet stones. The handle was made of wood and then covered with leather.

The leather sheath with wooden core was covered with leather and decorated with fittings.

The sword is used exclusively for ornament or decoration.
