Seax of Beagnoth - magnificent variant
The so-called Seax of Beagnoth is an Anglo-Saxon find from the 9th century. The original was found in the Thames in London in 1857 and is now an exhibit in the British Museum. For this reason it is often referred to as the Thames scramasax.
The intricate engraving on this piece is interesting. Although runes are extremely uncommon in finds of sax blades, the Beagnoth Seax does indeed contain an inscription. It is the Anglo-Saxon Futhark followed by "Beagnoth". It is not known who or what Beagnoth was, but it is thought that it may have been the name of the former owner or blacksmith.
This magnificent version of the Seax of Beagnoth is impressive not only because of its noble appearance, but also because of the thoughtful way in which it was made.
The reconstruction was made as close as possible to the early medieval original, both in shape and dimensions. The inscription in gold and silver has also been adapted to the original piece. The first part of the inscription reproduces the Anglo-Saxon futhark (= alphabet). The second part of the inscription is Beagnoth, presumably the name of the wearer or the armourer.
There is a narrow, deep gouge in the elaborate blade. The blade is unsharpened and the surface blued.
The wooden handle consists of two parts and is riveted to the tang with brass rivets. The wood of the handle is carved with knot patterns on the front and back, which round off the overall appearance of the Seax.
The scope of delivery also includes a genuine leather sheath, which consists of one piece of leather and is tied together with a leather strap. The leather straps, which are used to attach the sax to the belt, are a special eye-catcher. These have four brass applications with a knot pattern.
The pictured board for hanging the Seax is also included.
