Tallow candle or oil lamp in 2 different Sizes
Tallow candles were a widespread form of medieval room lighting. Small bowls like this one served as containers for the fat to be burnt. It is burnt by a wick which is placed in the fat and rises to the surface at the shaped beak.
The oil lamp is made of built-up ceramic and was produced by hand on the potter's wheel. It is a so-called stoneware, i.e. it is sintered by high firing temperature. This makes it waterproof and food safe.
