Medieval wooden clogs, pattens
Due to the dirty and unpaved roads, the soles of the turn-stitched shoes were put under a lot of stress and quickly became broken. That is why people wore these pattens over their shoes to protect the leather of the shoe.
The expression "Trippeln" comes from these undershoes and is certainly onomatopoeic in origin.
These pattens are made of a piece of wood and have nailed-on leather flaps to ensure a firm fit on the foot.
They are available in sizes 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46. So if you wear size 39, the bottom shoe is also suitable in size 38 or 40.
