Medieval tunic Eckhart, red/nature
This tunic is made of strong cotton fabric. It is straight cut, calf-length and slit at the sides to the waist. Front and back are also provided with a central, slightly shorter slit.
The tabard (also called a dress of arms) appeared in the 12th century and was worn over the knights' armor or chain mail. The tabard was meant to protect from sunlight and distinguish friend from foe in the thick of battle through the various color combinations.
Depictions of medieval tunics are numerous, for example, in the Maciejowski Bible (also Crusader Bible), a medieval picture Bible from the 13th century, and in the Codex Manesse, a song manuscript from the early 14th century.
