Medieval jewelry - accessories for your garb

Jewelry has accompanied mankind for a very long time. Already more than 100,000 years ago, people decorated themselves with shells. In various countries, body painting was (and in some cases still is) considered jewelry. With the discovery of processing options of various metals, people's imagination could take shape in the form of jewelry as we know it.

What kind of jewelry was there in the Middle Ages?

Popular medieval jewelry included:

- Chains with patterned pendants or amulets.
- bracelets
- neck rings or torques
- finger rings
- brooches
- clasps
- earrings
- pearl necklaces

What was the importance of jewelry in the Middle Ages?

In the Middle Ages, jewelry was a popular accessory worn by both men and women. Different cultures had their own styles of jewelry based on the materials used and individual taste. In addition, jewelry was a status symbol, which again varied by region and culture. However, one thing remained the same: the more opulent the bling, the higher the prestige.
In the early Middle Ages, jewelry also served as burial objects. In addition to clothing, utensils for personal hygiene and vessels for food and drink, men were often given weapons such as a sax, ax, shield or bow and arrow. The women's addition was completed with brooches, buckles as well as jewelry, such as earrings, pearl necklaces or jewelry boxes. In the course of Christianization, however, this became uncommon.

What materials were the medieval jewelry made of?

At that time, different materials were used for jewelry: in addition to gold and silver, materials such as bone, tin or bronze were processed. "Mass-produced" was made with an alloy of tin and lead. The poor people created simple pieces from clay or wood. Many jewelry pieces were elaborately made and skillfully decorated, such as by granulation. This was an ancient goldsmith technique of soldering very small gold or silver beads onto a piece of jewelry so that the jewelry created a sculptural effect through light and shadow. The Vikings learned to work with glass and made simple as well as colorfully decorated glass beads for necklaces or fibula chains. Amber was also used for processing. Thus it became apparently the export hit of the Vikings.

How does the jewelry come from the Middle Ages to our time?

Many findings prove jewelry in different variations and forms. Thus it became clear: the jewelry was important for the history of the Middle Ages, the Celtic and Roman times as well as the antiquity. We take you with us on this noble journey and offer replicas of earlier finds, which were made with the latest means and old materials - but which in detail should still reflect the former uniqueness. This mixture creates accessories which can be used today for larp, reenactment or medieval representation. But also for festive occasions such as weddings, carnival, costume events or to spice up everyday life with small ornaments quite simply, our products are available for you.
