Medieval earrings

Earrings have a long history and have been used for different functions in different eras and cultures. Earrings were worn as body jewelry as early as the Minoan culture (3000-1200 BC). There is evidence that ear piercings and jewelry are even older, as mummies from earlier eras have been found with ear piercings. In the Middle Ages, some women tended to wear jewelry in their hair, as hairstyles covered the ears and thus earrings were not necessary. However, earrings, like so much other jewelry, were considered symbols of power and social prestige, thus it was simply part of the middle-aged dress.

Why did people wear earrings in the Middle Ages?

Medieval earrings were an important part of the fashion world during this time. They could be made from a variety of materials, including metal, gold, and gemstones. Earrings were usually intricately designed and often featured religious symbols or motifs to signify wealth and status. People wore earrings for both practical and aesthetic reasons: They offered protection, served as a form of identification, and were also a sign of beauty.

Throughout the Middle Ages, earrings came in many shapes and sizes, from small studs to long pendants. They could be decorated with jeweled stones or, later, enamel for added detail. Regardless of their design, they all had one thing in common: they were a way for individuals to express their personal style and creativity. Medieval earrings were highly prized, both in terms of monetary value and as an expression of individual personality.
