The Coif, also called Coiffe was a standard piece of clothing in the Middle Ages. This was made of cotton fabric and lined with a light cotton fabric. The ribbons were used to tie it under the chin. The waistband hood reaches just above the ears, thus still covering them.
Hoods like this were worn mainly by men and children. Members of lower classes wore them to protect themselves from the sun and dirt while working, while middle-class people often wore them under the actual headgear above. It also served as protection against lice, for example. It was also hygienically a different time.
Even if there is no find, there are numerous images of Coiffes on medieval paintings.
