The knife in the Middle Ages
The knife was safe throughout the Middle Ages one of the most important possessions of every person. It was used for food, as all-purpose tool and weapon, even children had a knife, if the family had enough money to buy it.
Because metal in the Middle Ages was not cheap like today, they found no cutlery set in a medieval household for six persons, as it is normal in modern times. When an invitation to dinner each person brings his knife and the other tableware with. The knife was there the most important, because on awl or fork, if they were used, or a plate they could waive. They eat with his hands and the table was than the plate, but without a knife, the person was stymied. By a medieval dinner, the meals, like a pig, were always served in one piece and each cut with his knife down his portion.
Who was on the road, anyway always had a haversack while, reflecting the most important object, as there were a knife, a cup, a bowl and even a few foods such as bread, cheese, meat and things like this. Most the knives were worn in medieval times attached to the belt in a scabbard because it was so, as previously mentioned used as a tool and weapon, it can be documented by numerous contemporary illustrations and archaeological finds.
The knives have been changed in the Middle Ages, which goes from the 6th until the 15th century , so over a very long period of time. It changed, for example, the attachment of the handle from the set handle made of wood, horn or bone, with riveted plates of the same materials. Even if there were changes in the riveting etc. Also they changed the blade shape throughout the Middle Ages.
You find here in this store many different knives, across the entire epoch of the Middle Ages. Always look over again, there are always new models, some worked precisely according to findings.
